Substance Abuse Services Peer Recovery Coach - Kalamazoo

  • Provide peer outreach recovery services to engage individuals in the community to understand their treatment needs and obtain services to meet their personal goals.
  • Provide effective recovery-oriented services to individuals with co-occurring disorders utilizing agency endorsed materials.
  • Coordinate service activities with SA Services and other InterAct staff.

Provide drop-in support to community sites frequented by individuals potentially in need of substance abuse treatment (i.e. Ministry with Community, Gospel Mission, Oakland House, emergency rooms, etc.).  Work closely with other referral sources such as emergency mental health, Mental Health Recovery Court, SWMBH Access, etc. 

Use stage-wise interventions to engage with individuals in need of treatment. 

Assist individuals to obtain authorizations for health and behavioral health treatment.  Trouble-shoot potential barriers to treatment, negotiate complex services systems, and assist with benefits applications.

Provide advocacy and other peer supports that help individuals address stigma and build successful community supports.

Support individuals in navigating and using public transportation.

Provide one-to-one recovery coaching tailored to the specific recovery targets of individuals and based on careful self-disclosure, offering hope, empathy, reflective statements, and teaching personal responsibility.

Ensure the safety of persons served and personal safety through compliance with the agency’s safety and training plans.


Minimum Requirements:  High school diploma or certified GED.  Must have lived experience as a recipient of mental health and/or substance abuse services who has achieved a level of recovery consistent with performance of the job duties including personal sobriety and illness management. Life experiences with diverse racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, including experience with behavioral health issues preferred.  Must be supportive of culturally competent, recovery-based practices, and person-centered planning as a shared decision-making process.  Must support trauma-informed culture of safety to aid persons served in their recovery process. Good communication, motivation, and negotiation skills; organizational ability; and problem-solving skills needed.  Must have credentials required for third-party substance abuse services billing; Certified Peer Recovery Mentor-Michigan (CPRM-M) or Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPSS) preferred. Valid Michigan’s driver’s license and a vehicle to transport required.
